Buterin placed privacy alongside quantum security and native rollups when discussing Ethereum’s forward-looking roadmap in August.

He also compared the current development “Strawmap” with his 2023 roadmap. That comparison highlighted what he called “first-class attention to strong privacy.”

The commitment builds on arguments he made in March about Ethereum’s role among “sanctuary technologies.” He described open-source infrastructure that would let people transact and communicate without government pressure. Privacy and individual autonomy formed central parts of that vision.

Buterin later identified four properties Ethereum should preserve: censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security. He grouped those principles under the acronym “CROPS.”

He also urged the Ethereum Foundation to concentrate resources on censorship resistance, privacy, and security.

It aims to make transaction exclusion harder for powerful block builders, including transactions associated with privacy protocols. Researchers are also considering a protocol-level shielded pool for ETH and ERC-20 transfers.

Layer 2 Review Examines Usage and Specialization

Alongside the Ethereum privacy work, Vitalik Buterin proposed reviewing Ethereum’s Layer 2 roadmap through the Ethereum Magicians forum.

The proposal on Ethereum news describes a widening difference among general-purpose Layer 2 networks. A small number have attracted users and liquidity, while many newer networks record negligible daily transaction volumes.
