Vitalik Buterin Challenges AI Security Warnings
The comments follow his disagreement with investor and AI-risk commentator Liron Shapira over Bitcoin’s vulnerability. Shapira claimed AI could undermine Bitcoin’s security and trigger a 50% price decline within two years.
Vitalik Buterin responded by calling for secure, verifiable, open-source technology across software, operating systems, and hardware.

That response placed the emphasis on construction rather than a continuing race to discover vulnerabilities. Buterin acknowledged that defenders could try to identify every weakness before attackers find them.

Keeping message contents unreadable to outsiders refers to only one part of the problem. Developers must also address forged messages, blocked deliveries, application crashes, and attackers who replay previous communications.
The questions then extend to the infrastructure supporting those discussions. Buterin highlighted compromised servers, tampered public-key identifiers, hacked devices, and operating-system bugs that could expose secret keys. He also questioned if messages are reliable when a device is broken ahead of or after delivery.
Other concerns involve databases, programming tools, software libraries, and hardware signals that leak information. Meanwhile, message sizes, sender identities, recipient identities, and precise timestamps can reveal details beyond the contents themselves.
Buterin argued that these considerations make readable, carefully constructed security definitions essential to meaningful verification.
Those definitions can exceed a thousand lines of code, he noted. Even so, he said, reviewing their adequacy often remains more manageable than checking the underlying implementation directly. Better tools could further simplify that work, although he acknowledged that user interfaces may offer less of this advantage.
Ethereum’s Direction Requires Broader Verification
Buterin also explained that a program can satisfy multiple compatible security definitions simultaneously. Combining code offers no equivalent assurance, because a bug in either component can compromise the whole program. When definitions conflict, he said, developers identify an underlying issue that requires closer examination.
That distinction supports his call to expand verification beyond selected sections of code. Earlier efforts sometimes overlooked components that later proved critical, reflecting the historical difficulty and scarcity of verification.
He now advocates checking databases, networking, caching, and every other component of the program, asserting that modern AI can perform this work.
